Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes lungs. The flu can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.

Flu symptoms are different from a cold symptom.  The flu usually comes on suddenly. People who have the flu often feel some or all of these symptoms:   Fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, fatigue and sometimes diarrhea and vomiting. It’s important to note that not everyone experiencing the flu will have a fever.

How Flu Spreads:

Most experts believe that flu viruses spread mainly by tiny droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or even talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby. In addition, a person might get flu by touching a surface or object that has flu viruses on it and then touching their own mouth, nose or possibly eyes.

Preventing Seasonal Flu:

The first and MOST important step in preventing flu is to get a flu vaccine each year. Because you are in direct contact with our clients, The ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT ON AGING recommends that all employees get vaccinated yearly. Getting vaccinated has shown to reduce flu related illnesses and the risk of serious flu complications that can result in hospitalization or even death.

NOTE: CCSI will not pay for this vaccination.

Our clients are at a significant risk when exposed to the influenza virus. The steps, you as a Homecare Aide can take to minimize the risk of exposure to our frail older adults, is to get the Influenza Vaccination annually.

Places where employees can receive the vaccination at a reduced cost or free:

A list of local pharmacies in your planning and service area that offer the vaccination and pricing. (See Attached)

HCA’s who are union members and enrolled in SEIU Healthcare Illinois and Indiana can get a flu shot with no co-pay (free) at any Walgreens or at their primary care physician, if the shot is administered by a nurse practitioner. HCA’s can contact SEIU Healthcare at 1-877-734-8543 if you have questions.   However, if a you go anywhere else, you may have to pay a $15.00 co-pay or more depending on where you reside in your geographic area.
